Meet Perry L. McCarty

'An engineering hero'

'an American engineer' He is a pioneer of the field of environmental biotechnology, which is the basis for small-scale and large-scale pollution control and safe drinking water systems. 

His achievements in the design and operation of water and wastewater systems have improved the lives of millions of people, all over the world. 

1960s

Dr.McCarty applied thermo dynamics to estimate growth rates in microbial systems. This work is used extensively by environmental biologists, chemists, and engineers in the study of biological processes in natural environments. 

1979

His research on anaerobic treatment of wastewater which led to the development of the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) process.

1992

He received the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement

1994

McCarty's research on environmental engineering led to the development of biological waste treatment, which has been used in water and wastewater management worldwide.
