What is 'Planetary Health'?

Traditionally, medical science is based on systems within the human body.

'Planetary Health' broadens health research to include the external systems that sustain or threaten human life.

What’s the Difference? Planetary Health Explained

Planetary health has gathered significant momentum since Sir Andy first published on the link between human health and environmental change in 1991, and particularly since it first appeared in a 2014 commentary in The Lancet.

But what's the difference between Planetary Health, Global Health, and Public Health?

The Lancet Planetary Health’s editor-in-chief Raffaella Bosurgi explains:

“While public health is about health protection and health promotion within the health systems and global health looks at how to improve the health of populations worldwide,

planetary health broadens this discussion by looking at the societies, civilizations

and the ecosystems on which they depend.

“Climate change isn’t just an environmental emergency...  it’s also a health emergency.”
